Germany: Frankfurt
Frankfurt-Main Airport (FRA)
BEST WAY DOWNTOWN: Train

BASICS
Frankfurt-Main, the largest airport in Germany, is located six miles (9 km) southwest of the center of Frankfurt. An airport information center in terminal one, area B, is open from 6:30 A.M. to 10 P.M. Lufthansa operates several information desks around areas A and B of Terminal 1. There is also an information desk located near the baggage claim in Terminal 2.

The airport's Web site provides information on:

TAXI
There are plenty of taxis outside the arrivals area. The fare to the center of town is about 40 deutsche mark ($21) and the trip takes about 20 minutes; 40 minutes during the rush hours (7-9 in the morning).

TRAIN
The train is the most cost-effective way if you are going to the center of town. The airport train station is on a main line of the German Rail Network (DB), and is a short walk from arrivals area A, inside Terminal 1. If you arrive in Terminal 2, take the shuttle to terminal 1. S-Bahn trains leave every 10 to 15 minutes, usually from Track 1, and go to the Hauptbahnhof. The trip takes about 10 minutes, and some of the trains will show the destination "Frankfurt Sud." Trains are clean and luggage space is available.

Train fare to the Hauptbahnhof is about 5.50 deutsche mark ($3), and the trains run from 5:30 A.M. to 12:30 A.M. daily. Purchase a ticket from the ticket machines or the ticket office before boarding. Once at the Central Train Station you may catch a taxi to your hotel. Hotels within walking distance of the station include the Bauer (2 blocks), Continental, Concorde, Cristal, Europa, Excelsior, Hamburger Hof, Intercity, Monopol, National, Parkhotel, Scandic Crown, and the West Falinger Hof.

Intercity and ICE (Intercity Europe Express) trains also depart from the airport station to many other cities in Germany. This is especially convenient to such cities as Nürnberg, where every hour you can catch a train right at Frankfurt airport, and travel right to Nürnberg Central Station.

HOTEL SHUTTLE BUS
Hotels near the airport (and only hotels near the airport), such as the Astron, have free shuttles to and from the airport. Ask if your hotel has a shuttle when you book your room.

RENTAL CAR
Avis, Eurocar, Hertz, and Sixt can be found in the arrivals level of Terminal 1, and in the main arrivals area in the new Terminal 2.
